Detailed description of Highland Country Club, CLOSED 2018

Highland Country Club is a Private, 9 hole golf course located in Attleboro, Massachusetts.

Highland golf course opened in 1901. The course was designed by Tom Pettis and Donald Ross.

Highland was founded in 1901 when Clarence Watson donated his farm for the facility. It was sold to the Balfour Realty Trust in the 1950s and then sold to its members in 1975. Besides the golf course, Highland operates a function hall and clubhouse

White tees: par-35. 3,087 yards

Red tees: par-35, 2,613 yards

Alternate tee locations are available allowing a golfer to play a double loop 18-hole round with a different tee perspective on the "second" nine.

Amenities include a charming 1760 square foot pro shop, full-service clubhouse, driving range and practice area.

Closed January 2018.

The course filed for bankruptcy in January 2018 and closed operations at the same. The highest bid currently received for the club, which has a debt of around $1.7 million that must be paid off by the buyer, was reported to be $2.1 million.

Highland CC is located on 93 acres in the heart of the city of Attleboro, The city’s planning department has estimated that as many as 131 homes could be built on the property, which is zoned for residential use.

The city has a filing with the court to assert its “right of first refusal” on the property.  If allowed by the judge, the city could eventually match the highest bid and buy the property.

The city mayor, Mayor Heroux had said he’s aware of a number of people interested in the property, including one a “philanthropist” who requested anonymity and might leave it as “open space.”

Heroux added that most people don’t want to see houses built on the property, which has been a golf course for 117 years and before that was a farm. And while it could be a beautiful neighborhood, it could also create budget problems because residential property taxes in Attleboro don’t cover the cost of a child’s education in public schools.
